Denis Desrochers, President

Denis, president of Milieu and Senior Biologist, has been the Project Manager for all the eel studies conducted by MILIEU since 1994. Denis has a solid experience in analysing and addressing the challenges that migratory fish face when confronted to dams in water systems. Since 1989, he has been responsible for the supervision, data analysis, and reporting of most studies performed for Hydro-Québec at the Beauharnois, Mitis 1 and Rivière-des-Prairies Power Dams, and at the Chambly Dam. For over 10 years, he has been leading, among others, large and medium scale studies performed for the New York Power Authority. His extensive background and experience allow him to successfully lead studies, to maintain excellent relations with the parties involved, always striving for scientific work of exceptional quality. His areas of expertise are performing studies of upstream and downstream fish passages at hydroelectric projects, freshwater fish biology, fishways and bypass structures, migration and reproduction habitat studies of fish populations, environmental assessments and monitoring, radio-telemetry and hydroacoustic, data acquisition, analysis systems, and electronic eel counters.

Alexandre Guindon, M.Sc. in Aquatic Ecology

Alexandre joined Milieu in August 2010 and quickly took in charge a number of studies conducted for Hydro-Quebec, the New-York Power Authority and Ontario Power Generation.  His tasks include customer service, data analysis, quality assurance and report writing. Before joining Milieu, Alexandre held various research assistant positions in Universities. He was in charge of Dr David Bird’s laboratory at UQAM, which is part of the Groupe de Recherche Interuniversitaire en Limnologie (GRIL). He also helped develop coupled hydrological-ecological models at the University of Waikato in New-Zealand, in collaboration with Drs Kevin Collier, Brendan Hicks and David Hamilton. Previously, he completed a B. Sc. in microbiology at Laval and Louvain-la-Neuve ( Belgium ) Universities. During his graduate studies, his focus shifted to aquatic ecology. His thesis discussed relationships between cyanobacterial community composition and toxicity in lakes located in the southern townships, Quebec .

Simon Guillemette, B.Sc. in Biology

Simon has been working at Milieu since 2001 and participated in most of the studies performed at the Moses-Saunders Power Dam, Canal-de-Saint-Ours, Rivière-des-Prairies Generating Station, Beauharnois Power Dam, Chambly Dam, and Les Cèdres Generating Station. Simon was an instrumental member of the field teams that performed the various studies at the Moses-Saunders Power Dam from 2001 to 2009. Simon has handled and tagged more than 5,000 eels. Additionally, he is skilled and highly experienced with driving boats on large river systems and in turbulent waters. Simon spent over 250 hours on the turbulent waters in the tailrace of the Robert Moses Power Dam during the 2007 and 2008 seasons. Before joining Milieu, Simon worked in silviculture for Groupe Proforêt where he was a field leader in charge of performing forest inventories, tree plantings, and sampling methods. His areas of expertise are freshwater fish biology, handling and tagging of American Eels, surgical insertion of telemetry tags, operation of eel ladders and eel traps, silviculture, and operation and data collection using various equipment and software.

Cédric Lemay, B.Sc. in Biology

Cédric has been working at Milieu since 2001 and participated in most of the studies performed at the Moses-Saunders Power Dam, Canal-de-Saint-Ours, Rivière-des-Prairies Generating Station, Beauharnois Power Dam, Chambly Dam, and Les Cèdres Generating Station. Cédric was an intrumental member of the field team that performed the various studies at the Moses-Saunders Power Dam from 2001 to 2009. Since 2006, Cédric is the Principal Technician responsible for the maintenance, operation, and monitoring of the Eel-Passage Facility at the Robert Moses Power Dam. Cédric has handled and tagged more than 5,000 eels. Additionally, he is skilled and highly experienced with driving boats on large river systems and in turbulent waters. Before joining Milieu, Cédric was employed at Environment Canada where he participated in the identification and field sampling of aquatic plants. His areas of expertise are freshwater fish biology, aquatic plants, water ecosystems, handling and tagging of American Eels and Redhorse species, surgical insertion of telemetry tags, operation of eel ladders and eel traps, and operation and data collection using various equipment and software.
