About Milieu
MILIEU is a well-established consulting firm specializing in environmental studies. Over the years, MILIEU has acquired extensive expertise on the behavior and fate of
downstream and upstream migratory fish at and in the vicinity of hydroelectric projects and dams.
MILIEU
is a dynamic firm recognized for its scientific rigor, its quest for the utmost work quality, and its efficient and timely accomplishment
of targeted objectives. MILIEU has gathered a team of outstanding biologists that together provide knowledge, skills, and creativity. They are at the heart of the success of the studies and projects undertaken
by the company.
MILIEU is sensitive to the client’s needs and expectations and we prioritize to conduct the mandate entrusted to us most efficiently while
promoting communication and exchange of ideas between concerned parties.
MILIEU performs environmental studies involving numerous fish species, notably American Shad (Alosa sapidissima),
Lake Sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) and American Eel (Anguilla rostrata). MILIEU has performed large-scale studies
to monitor the efficiency of multispecies fishways. One of these fishways is located at the Canal-St-Ours Dam on the Richelieu River, where over 35 species of fish,
including the Copper Redhorse (Moxostoma hubbsi), indigenous to the Province of Quebec, was identified.
MILIEU offers services in many areas relating to migrating fish populations, particularly in these specialized fields:
-
Studies of fish abundance, distribution, and movement,
-
Studies of upstream and downstream fish passages at
hydroelectric projects and dams,
-
Consulting services regarding fishways and bypass structures,
-
Fishway monitoring and effectiveness evaluations,
-
Studies on the migration and reproductive habitats of fish populations,
-
Fish monitoring using telemetry and hydroacoustic equipments,
-
Design, installation, and operation of custom-built fish counting equipment with computerized data acquisition,
-
Customized design, construction, and installation of eel traps and eel ladders at Hydroelectric Power Projects and Dams.

Milieu and American Eels
MILIEU has been conducting studies on American Eel (Anguilla rostrata) since 1994.
Over the years, MILIEU has developed
an expertise on the species, particularly pertaining to the evaluation of upstream migrant population abundance, movements and biological characteristics in the vicinity of dams and hydroelectric projects.
MILIEU has gained distinctions in research and development of methods and equipment
for eel passage upstream of dams and hydroelectric projects. MILIEU notably provided consulting services during the design of the eel ladders at the Beauharnois Power Dam (Québec, Canada).
These eel ladders are featured in the videos produced by Hydro-Québec (the links are presented below):

Products Offered by Milieu
Over the course of the many investigations that MILIEU
has conducted on the migration and upstream passage of juvenile eels at hydroelectric projects and dams, MILIEU
has designed and perfected types of substrates that optimize the ascent of elvers and juvenile eels.
The eel traps and eel ladders designed by MILIEU
are considered to be some of the best and most efficient in the domain.
MILIEU'S substrate ramps for juvenile eels and elvers were presented in a review publication issued by the Environment Agency
(refer to sections 5.3.4 and 6.3.2). Click on the link below to view this publication.
